Junior Infants: Term 3 Review

We are finished our last term of Junior Infants. I would like to congratulate all the children on working so hard all year. It has been a pleasure teaching such wonderful boys and girls and I wish them every success in Senior Infants.

Here are some photographs of our last term;

SESE: We investigated the best materials to use to build the three little pigs houses. We also had our annual Science Day.

Arts: We continued to work on the theme of the Garden Centre. In May, we focused on the theme of Animals for Aistear and set up a veterinary surgery in our role play area. We also had a small world and water play section. As part of Aistear, we created various farm and jungle animals. For June, our theme was summer. In our role play area, the children were working in the travel agents. We also had small world, construction and water/sand play.

PE: We held Active School Week the last week of school. We did lots of activities – we did 8 or more laps of the parish field per child, we did zumba dancing with Ms. Nooney and irish dancing with Ms. Mullally. We also had dancing every morning in the hall.

Fun Day: The 6th class pupils held a Fun Day to raise money for their recent trip to Delphi. The children enjoyed buying toys and treats and playing the various games organised.

School Tour: For our school tour, we went to Caragh Open Farm on Tuesday 28th of June. The children really enjoyed seeing the various animals and playing in the playgrounds. On Wednesday 29th of June, each class got a session of Playball and then the three classes came together for a little party.

Junior Infants A: December Review

December Review

Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break and I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year. We had a very busy month in December preparing for Christmas. Here are some of the things we have been learning.

English:

We discussed the topic of Christmas. We continued to learn our Jolly Phonics sounds. We read the stories “The Three Little Pigs”, “When Santa Turned Green”, “Santa’s Littlest Helper”, “The Fourth King” and “Santa’s Sleigh is on its way to Ireland”. We learned the poem “When Santa Got Stuck up the Chimney” and performed it at our Carol Service. We continued to practice our writing patterns. We wrote letters to and from Santa during Aistear.

Maths:

We learned about 2D shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle). We created shape pictures and went on a shape walk around the school. We followed instructions to place objects in certain positions. We practiced our number rhymes.

Gaeilge:

We learned lots of new Irish vocabulary based on Sa Bhaile (Home) agus Nollaig (Christmas). We listened to the stories “Cinnín Óir agus na Trí Bhéar” agus “An Nollaig”. We also performed part of our Carol Service as Gaeilge.

S.E.S.E.

We read the story of “The Nativity” and sketched three stages of the story into our copies. We discussed how Christmas is celebrated in Ireland and how it is celebrated around the world. We discussed ways to save energy and protect the environment at Christmas.

Art/Music:

We painted our dream homes and invited our parents in to see them. We did a variety of Christmas art. We performed our class Nativity and our Carol Service. The children did fantastic jobs and thank you to all for coming to see them.

Aistear:

Our Aistear theme for December was ‘Santa’s Workshop’. The children got an opportunity to play in each of the four stations: Imaginary Play (roleplay as Santa/Mrs. Clause, elves, reindeer etc.), Small World (Christmas village and small figures), Construction (designing and making toys for Santa’s workshop) and Creative Play (making Christmas cards).

S.P.H.E/P.E.:

We practiced passing a ball around body parts, rolling a ball, bouncing a ball, and throwing and catching a ball. We talked about how to be a good friend. We read stories on bullying and discussed ways to deal with bullying. We talked about the safety rules: Say No, Move Away and Tell.

Santa even popped by for a visit!

Junior Infants – Miss Johnson

Welcome to the Caragh National School blog. We hope to use this blog during the year to share with you all the hard work we are doing.  It would be great if you could look at our blog regularly with your child and discuss all that we have been learning.

These are some of the things that we have been learning so far this year;

English:

We discussed the topics autumn and Halloween. We’ve been practicing our nursery rhymes and learning about the characters in our new readers. We’ve also been strengthening the muscles in our hands by doing cutting activities, peg activities, Marla, rolling socks etc. We read lots of stories including Elmer the Elephant, Winnie the Witch and Room on the Broom.

Maths:

We sorted objects in a variety of ways – by colour, type, shape and size. We matched items that were the same and items that were related to each other. We used toys to make lots of different patterns. Then we made a pattern on Winnie the Witch’s tights using our oil pastels. We also learned lots of number rhymes and songs; 5 Little Ducks, 12345 Once I caught a fish alive etc. We learned the song ‘5 Little Pumpkins’ and performed it for Senior Infants at assembly.

Gaeilge:

We have been learning lots of new Irish vocabulary based on Mé Féin (myself), An Scoil (school) agus Oíche Shamhna (Halloween). Teidí, Oisín agus Niamh help us to learn our Gaeilge through comhrá (conversation), amhráin (songs) agus cluichí (games).

S.E.S.E.

We sequenced nursery rhymes and stories into beginning, middle and end. We discussed signs of autumn and Halloween traditions. We went for colour and autumn walks and recorded the things that we saw on our walk.  We drew a map of our classroom into our copies.

Art/Music:

We created some beautiful art work – colour collages, self-portraits, Elmer the Elephants, autumn collages, autumn trees, Winnie the Witch tights and fireworks. We also learned lots of new songs such as, Hickory Dickory Dock, Big Green Frog, She’ll be Riding on a Broomstick etc. We marched around to music. We listened to ‘Aquarium’ from ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ and drew what we imagined.

S.P.H.E/P.E.:

We talked about ourselves and introduced ourselves to our new friends. We looked at our characteristics in a mirror and drew a picture of ourselves in our copies. We played playground games such as, ‘What time is it Mr. Wolf?’ and ‘Duck Duck Goose’. We have been practicing balancing beanbags on body parts, passing beanbags and throwing and catching beanbags.

The children have settled really well into Caragh N.S. They are working hard and making lots of new friends. I hope they have a relaxing and enjoyable midterm break and I look forward to seeing them again on November 2nd.

Miss Johnson. 🙂
