Leinster Blitz

By Orlagh F.

This year after attending trials for the Kildare U- 12 county team, I was selected to go through. Competition was hard as there was a lot of talented girls from all over the county looking for a position on the team.  The teams trained on Sunday morning at 9.15am until 11am  and matches took place midweek.

Unfortunately for me, I broke my wrist nearing the end of our first match meaning I could no longer play for a while but I continued to train and commit to the team.

On the 17th of September we had a day of matches. Teams from all over the country attended and competed to try and win the under12s leinster blitz.

Most counties put in three teams in three different divisions, the Kildare panel had a team in division 3, division 2 and division 1 of which I was captain.

On the day of the blitz everyone including the managers and parents were very nervous for the day ahead.

Our first match was taking place at 10:00 am, so we started our warm up at around 9:00am.

So then came the time our first match was against Dublin, from the start it was a close game but the Lilywhites beat the dubs. Next we played Longford. That was an easy enough match since we were very fit from training all year round. After that came the Wexford yellowbellies trying to beat us, they were a good side but not good enough.

That was it, we were in the final up against Meath. Nerves started to kick in but we got there in the end. There was a big crowd watching us and cheering both sides on. The final whistle went, that was it all of our training in snow, storms, hailstones and the odd bit of sun had paid off!

The whole squad was roaring, chanting and hugging anyone and everyone around them. We got presented the cup and I made my speech as captain.

Everyone who was there had a wonderful day, we had played lovely football and won what we have worked very hard for every Sunday morning!
